Big T's 8th Annual Science Fair
We are having our EIGHTH ANNUAL BIG T SCIENCE FAIR on Monday, December 3, 2018 beginning at 3:15pm and ending at 6:00pm. Please return the participation form located on the backside of this letter to school by Friday, October 19th if your student would like to participate in Science Fair. Please note that we do have a “non-competitive” category for those students who either can't attend the Science Fair, but want to do a project, or just aren't competitive. Display boards will be available thru Big T for $2.00. Participants may purchase their own boards from other sources. Scholarship assistance for materials can be applied for if needed, email Courtney Audy (courtneyaudy@yahoo.com).
We are continuing an “interactive experience” verses a “competition”. We will still have judging and trophies for top placers in each grade - the feedback from students was enthusiastic for the awards. Parents and community members will be able to view not only our children's science projects, but also science related demonstrations and activities for education and entertainment.
Participating students will be completing a project based on the scientific method. The objective is to have the student use all parts of the scientific method to conduct an experiment, to create a display board of information, and to verbally explain his/her project in a presentation to the judges on Monday, December 3, 2018 - if the students are participating in the “competitive” categories. Non-competitive participants do not have to stay for the Science Fair or do a verbal presentation.
An introduction to creating a science fair project will be held as a workshop on Monday, October 8, 2018 from 3:15pm - 4:30pm in the art room for all Big T students grades 1-5th. This is a FREE workshop for those students registered for the science fair. Any student needing additional help with their projects can join us on Monday, November 12thfor a “wrap up” of their project at Big T from 3:15pm - 4:30pm in the art room.
When the attached participation form is received in the front office, your student will receive a packet of specific information relating to the display board requirements, judging criteria, and a timeline to help with managing the project. Additional resources maybe found online; www.sciencebuddies.org is a great resource.
All projects need to be at school on the morning of MONDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2018 and can be brought directly to their classroom. Volunteers will be setting up the project displays. The science fair will be held in the gymnasium, starting at 3:15 pm Monday, December 3, 2018. It is required that your student be present to participate in the Science Fairto provide information to the judges if your student is participating in the competitive category.
As always, volunteers are appreciated!
